Lens Gears!

What indie filmmaker doesn’t want to use the same high-end equipment that Hollywood uses? Well of the biggest things that film makers tend to look at is Follow Focus. A follow focus serves its purpose by giving you more accurate and smoother focusing on your lens. It keeps your hands off the lens while you are recording. The big pain in this process is that you have to mount a gear on your lens. There are a lot of company’s that have lens gears that fit various lenses. Such as Jag35, Red Rock Micro, and Zacuto. These gears take about 2-3 minutes to attach to your lens, and you don’t really want to keep these on your lenses at all times.

I have used multiple lens gears, but they just take to much time to attach to my lenses. I found these Lens gears that are zip tie lens gears. There are from a company called "Wide Open Camera", you can also get some thru "Jag35" as well. These gears have a really low profile when attached to the lens, so you are able to just keep the lens gears attached to your lens the whole time. You can’t beat the price for these, there are adjustable to fit pretty much any lens you own. Just measure and cut off the part you don’t need, then just attach the lens gear will two zip ties and your set. It saves on setup time and is just as good as other lens gears.

I am very happy with these lens gears and plan to use them on every lens that I have!

Yellow Book

I had the opportunity to help with a job from "Rob Wiltsey" for the "Yellow Book" They wanted some videos on their "Direct Mail" service that they offer. I shot a meeting that was designed for employees to learn about Direct Mail. Then I shot interviews with the regional Vice President (Greg Sirianni) and the CSE (David Rojas). It was a really successful shoot. I am unable to upload there video due to legal issues. But I did upload some screen shots from the interviews. Once they give me the ok I will upload the interviews. Also check out my buddies website at www.robwiltsey.com

I used a t2i with a Rokinon 35mm 1.4, Small HD DP4, Konova Slider. The second camera was a 60D with the Canon 50mm 1.4.

Jason + Jo

I had the opportunity to film and edit Jason and Jo Jacksons wedding. I also the opportunity to work with someone i look up to in the DSLR world for advice on products and shooting techniques, Jarrod from Jasl Basl productions. We shot this wedding on a beautiful ranch. The Wedding wasn’t planned out as much as i would have like it to. But me and Jarrod just went with the flow. I am very happy with the footage that we both got. I always like to blog about what i learned from jobs that i shoot. The first is always to check and make sure the Lav mics are on when given to the Bride and Groom. I failed to turn off the mute button when given to the bride. The audio was ok but didnt impress me at all. The other thing is to make sure all your gear works and that you know how to use it. I was using my friends small HD DP6 with a articulating arm. Long story short the arm just fell apart on a shot, kinda strange that something made by Red Rock Micro would do that. So next time its best to be prepared. One last thing is to always have backup batteries and also extra memory cards. Other than that the Wedding was my most successful Wedding shoot! Thank to Jarrod from Just Basl for flying from Washington to side shoot with me, its always better to have more than one person on the shoot.

If you have questions about gear please feel free to email me and ask. Most of the gear is listed on the Vimeo link.
